QUESTION:
Hi Laura and Dawn,

I am new/late to the Baby Wearing concept. I have a 5-year-old and a 20-month-old. I'm thinking it isn't worth investing in a sling for the 20-month-old. How long do you find the sling useful? He likes to ride on my back or be held all the time, which is cumbersome without support. What kind would you recommend for the older toddler?
-Sharon

RESPONSE FROM LAURA:

Dear Sharon,

How long you can carry a child in a sling depends a lot on the relative size of you and your child as well as your general fitness level. Most standard adjustable slings give weight limits of 35-40 lbs. If you are currently carrying your toddler in your arms a lot anyway, I think you'll find a sling will redistribute his weight and make it easier to handle his weight, in addition to freeing up your hands.
If cost is the main issue, you could look for a used sling at a consignment store or on . The Elizabeth Lee catalogue has a sling pattern, so you could sew one for yourself quite inexpensively.

In addition to slings, you might want to look into the Sara's Ride (which is a hip carrier) or a backpack carrier.
