QUESTION:
My daughter is 9 months old. I haven't worn her in the past, but I'd like to start. Is it too late?

RESPONSE FROM LAURA:

Hi,
I don't think it's too late to try babywearing! Your daughter may have some strong preferences about what kind of carrier she likes and what positions she enjoys most, but why not go ahead and experiment? I'd suggest borrowing different slings, backpacks and carriers from friends to test out before spending any money. Alternatively maybe you can find stores that will let you test them out before buying (or that have liberal return policies) or check out a kids' consignment store for used baby carriers.

My daughter really enjoyed being carried throughout her toddlerhood - there were many situations (in crowds, when there were things up high she wanted to see, when she just felt like cuddling and being held close) where I was grateful to have my sling.

Good luck!
Laura

RESPONSE FROM DAWN:

It is never too late to start wearing a baby! However, some babies, being used to strollers, may find the sling constricting. At 9 months, I think your baby would really enjoy being held in the sling on your hip. With a big baby (one who is supporting her own weight), I suggest an unpadded sling, although any sling will work. She might also like the backpack experience at this age.

In fact, it is during the crawling months and early toddlerhood that babywearing is very helpful to parents. Pop a baby in the backpack, turn on some fun music, and start tidying the house. The baby has fun and is with mama, the house gets tidied, and no little tornado is following in your wake unshelving books and toys.

Remember, though, that there is a learning curve to baby wearing, so don't dispair if it doesn't work easily the first few times. And if you go the backpack route, a good backpack with a nice, sturdy hip belt and chest strap will enable you to use it for more years as the baby gains weight. It has always been my experience that in the second half of the first year, babies enjoy being held. Good luck!
