MamaBarter is a unique way for parents to trade goods and services (at least services that travel well) with other parents via the internet. This listserv will operate as a way for us to advertise things we want to trade away for things we want or need. For example, if a parent has an extra sling and is looking for a wooden truck, she can advertise as such on this list. Any interested parties can contact her and then they can negotiate the trade privately.
Goods can include toys, tools, clothes, diapers, housewares, games, books, music, etc. As a matter of fact, anything "family-friendly" (no wild sex toys, please, I don't wanna have to deal with flamewars and no infant formula--if you've got extra of *that* then send it on to a homeless shelter or food bank). Services might include help setting up a web site; assistance in creating an annual family newsletter; gardening/cooking/carpentry advice, etc.
The rules are fairly simply and are as follows:
You are responsible for what you trade on-list. You may not hold the listowner (me) responsible for a bad trade. In other words, if you end up with a nursing shirt that doesn't fit and the person you got it from isn't returning your calls, there isn't anyone you can sue about it.
Be honest when describing what you have to trade. I'm just advertising this list to other AP-type lists so the people you're trading with are probably people you'll have dealings with on other parts of the internet. If you want to remain a happy member of this little AP community, then I strongly encourage you to be honest. Even better, if you have access to a scanner, you can build a bartering page and let list members know the address.
If you need something special or have something new and nifty to trade, send an announcement to the list. However, if you have a regular service (like web design) and want to make sure we all know about it, you can post that announcement once a month. No more than that unless someone is looking for that specific good or service. This will keep the list traffic down. I'll post a reminder around the 15th of each month so you don't need to keep track of when you last posted.
A sample announcement post might look like:
Howdy folks. I just got a really cute dress from Gymboree from my inlaws. Thing is, little Lottie hates pink and purple so it's not going to get any wear from our house. It's size small which is Gymboree for 3T and is hot pink with purple flowers scattered round it. You can see a pic at http://mysite.com. I'm looking for a nice cement truck toy in trade. Lottie prefers green but we'll work with whatever you have!
A sample monthly post might look like:
I'm sending my monthly post advertising my quilt making services again. I will make quilts from baby blankets, sports events t-shirts, etc. In return, I'm looking for nice king-size sheet sets; good cookware; a set of rollerblades (size 8); a complete set of Lincoln Logs; or tickets to Disneyland. If you are interested in talking about any of this, please contact me at me@mysite.com
This isn't meant to be a chat list but if chat happens, I'm not gonna jump on anyone as long as it doesn't take over the list. Try to keep it to a minimum and absolutely NO jokes, stories, virus warnings, urban legends, etc. If you're looking for a chattier list, lemme know offlist and I'll give you some places you might want to check out. (I keep track of lots of listservs as a hobby.)
If this list really gets up and moving, I might try to find someone to help me expand what I'm offering on this page (like adding feedback forms for people, maybe creating memberships) but for now I like the idea of it being small and friendly. Still, any advice or stuff you want to share, let me know.
